Meet your local representative at the pier and begin your excursion to this extraordinary and historic area. Your first stop will be the famous caves near the town of Castellana. Many centuries ago these large underground cavities were used as storage by the local farmers. In more recent times the caves were avoided by people as stories of monsters and ghosts who lived in the caves prevailed. Then in 1938 the scientist Franco Anelli explored the caves and discovered the astonishing depths and dramatic formations that were inside. The underground complex of caves extends to a length of about 2 miles and to a depth of about 210 feet below the ground level. Your visit of the caves lasts about an hour and as you walk deeper and deeper into the system you will be in awe at the pure white formations made by the stalactites and stalagmites. This is a very popular sight for Italians to visit during summer vacations, so popular in fact, that about 50 percent of all visitors come here in August.

Next stop will be Svevo Castle, one of the landmark of Bari. Fronting the Adriatric Sea, the castle backs onto the defensive walls that once protected the old city center. Originally the site of a Roman stronghold, the location was used by the Byzantines to build a more “modern” and imposing fortress as part of their overall system of coastal fortifications. It was destroyed in 1156 by the King of Sicily but rebuilt by the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II, who loved Puglia and left many a castle all over the area. The Castle was redecorated by the Aragons to achieve the look it has today, complete with bastions, ramparts, a moat, drawbridge and squat towers. Its seaside location and impressive size give it a looming and characteristic presence in the historic quarter near the city’s busy port.

After completing this exterior visit, continue your tour with a brief walk to the Cathedral of San Gregorio (exterior visit only). Admire the beauty of the “old city” as you walk the cobbled streets to the Basilica of San Nicola.

Well known for housing the relics of St. Nicholas, the basilica has an incredible history spanning almost one thousand years. Observe the unusual exterior of Basilica di San Nicola before heading inside for a more intimate look. Continue with a stroll through Barivecchia, or Old Bari, walking past Quadriportico, through Via Venezia and to Fortino.
